Designing a qualitative study. - Presents a new model of research design, representing the logic and process of qualitative research. Calling it an "interactive" model of research design, the author outlines 5 key components in the model: purposes, conceptual context, research questions, methods, and validity. Although these components are not unique to qualitative research design, the author contends that what is unique are the relationships among the components. Qualitative design is consequently flexible, due to the simultaneous nature of many of the research activities. Despite this flexibility, the author demonstrates, it is important for the researcher to have an underlying scheme that provides some guidance for a coherent research study. The abridged version of case study research: Design and method. - This chapter is intended to provide an overview of more thorough treatments of case study research. The chapter also includes new material on one especially important but still emerging aspect of case study research—the development and usefulness of logic models. This chapter serves as a refresher for those of you who are already familiar with case study research, as well as a starting point for those who may be considering case studies for research for the first time. It summarizes the basic tools, warns about major pitfalls, and previews ongoing attempts to advance the state of the art. In this sense, the chapter also is a springboard for eventually turning (or returning) to the fuller texts upon which much of it is based. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2019 APA, all rights reserved)

Handbook of applied social research methods. - This handbook is designed to be a resource for professionals and students alike. It is intended to offer a digest of 18 chapters related to the design of applied research, the collection of both quantitative and qualitative data, and the management and presentation of these data to a range of audiences. The contributors represent a variety of disciplines (sociology, business, psychology, political science, education, economics) and work in diverse settings (academic departments, research institutes, government, the private sector). Through a concise collection of their work, we hope to provide in one place a diversity of perspectives and methodologies that others can use in planning and conducting applied social research. Our attempt in this handbook is to offer a hands-on, how-to approach to research that is sensitive to the constraints and opportunities in the practical and policy environments, yet is rooted in rigorous and sound research principles.
